This makes for a well running engine when they are all working, but can be a big pain when one of them breaks. This happened to me not long ago after attempting to pick up my car from the roll cage builder earlier this month. Plan was to drive it back home as it was far away from home. BMW E30 No Start. In today’s guide I will go over the major components and systems to check for a non starting engine. As well as some of the finer points of a E30 chassis BMW with an m20 engine. The three major components of internal combustion are air, fuel, and spark. Having all three of these working together is necessary to the engine starting. One may not engage with the other working. Sensors for air could cut fuel. No fuel present could keep the computer for sparking. So with any non-starting car, don’t discount any system as the problem. Acura tsx 2018 repair manual. Checking for Spark: Good way to test for spark is to take off one of the spark plug wires at the plug. Then Using a screwdriver or some steel bladed tool that safely fits in the end of the wire, bring the screwdriver about a half inch from a metal section of the engine. (CAUTION USE A PLASTIC OR RUBBER HANDLED TOOL. THIS CRAP WILL ZAP YOU IF YOU ARE TOUCHING THE METAL) But alas no spark. So we test major Spark components. I this vehicle spark requires a good DME (computer),, and (known as CPS). We will start with the easiest and most likely cause of no spark/start. This little sensor provides the computer with ALL of the timing data for the engine. This part is located down on the front of the engine near the coolant cold side hose. It can be removed with a 5 mm allen key and disconnecting the wire from the other side. Common symptoms of a failing CPS involves the car not starting after it’s already warmed up and turned off (say for a convenient store run). The CPS can be tested with a voltage multi-meter using the Ohm Setting. Check to see if the number 1 and number 2 pin have an ohm resistance of about 500 (475-550ish). If out of range then it is a good chance that a new one is in order. If within range still good to check with known good or new as it is easy to test and still may yield different results. One coil provides the spark for all 6 cylinder. This is an older technology, where newer cars generally feature ‘coil on plug’ tech. That means each cylinder has its own coil and if one goes bad, you can generally limp home with misfires. With the older style single coil system, if the coil is bad, your engine will not run at all. First check that there is power to it on the two input points. The large plug on the top is the connection the delivers the spark to the rest of the plugs. If there is power to the coil, check that spark then comes out of it. Use the same method with a screwdriver on either end of the lead coming out of the top. If spark occurs there, your problem may lie in the Distributor cap or the rest of the spark plug wires. Inspect the rest of the wires to be in good condition. And remove the distributor cap and rotor for excessive wear. The cap and rotor deliver the spark individually to the plugs. Good contact is need between the two at each point as it spins. So all of the plug wires, cap and rotor, and the CPS all seem in good order. Then you have now come to the hard part. Wire tracing for days(maybe). This all means that the wiring to and fro from the computer are missing a link. First thing you should have already checked are the Fuses to make sure they are good to go. But Have you checked the relays. There are 4 relays that are important for the starting of the car. First are the 2 under load relays. These divert power to aid in the starting process. Normal 87/86/86/30 relay. Other two would be the “main relay” and the fuel pump relay. Main relay being the focus for now. Bmw Troubleshooting Guide FreeAs when ignition is switched to “on” this engages all running systems. This ended up being my cars issue. Do not use a generic relay here. I was using an ebay similar looking relay but obvious was not wired correctly as the OEM Genuine BMW one. As soon as I replaced it with another it burst into life. Without a working main relay the computer and fuel pump along with everything the computer controls will not engage. Bmw Smg Troubleshooting GuideJust the starter. So none of my other troubleshooting was changinging anything. The fuel pump relay is a normal relay be sure to test it. Grounds are important for spark. When i first put my car together I didn’t notice until someone standing outside the car saw sparks! There is a ground strap running from the body to the oil pan and one from the power links opposite the fuse box.
